Introduction
Public learning institutions have a responsibility of making sure that all children are treated equally without necessarily having to consider the fact that they belong to the LGBT community. Schools are known to be places where students are given an opportunity to explore and get to know their identity. However, for the LGBT community, the learning institutions create an environment that is very unwelcoming for them. The LGBT students not only lack support but they are also affected by discrimination in more than one way. When in comparison with the straight youths the LGBT students have higher chances of being neglected and abused. It is important to give children equal treatment while they are in school because that reduces discrimination.
Parent’s Opinion on the LGBT Students
Parents go through a lot of challenges trying to accept the children who are not straight and for that reason they tend to favor the straight children over those in the LGBT community. Putting in mind that teachers are also parents, the teachers take their personal opinion on the LGBT community to schools something that further contributes to their discrimination. One thing that frustrates the idea of having equal rights for the LGBT community is the lack of proper policies which support the LBGT community (Young, 2012). For that reason, the LGBT students in public schools continue to suffer and no one comes to their aid.
Bullying in Public Schools
Bullying is a significant challenge in the life of students who belong to the LGBT community. For that reason, various stakeholders have come up with ways in which bullying can be reduced. The first idea points out to have a curriculum that supports the LGBT community. Secondly, there is also the thought of having gay-straight alliances. Students from the LGBT community together with their straight counterparts can come together and form supportive alliances (Fetner & Kush, 2016). Through the alliances, the children will have an opportunity to interact freely and a friendly environment is created in the school. Applying the idea of Gay-Straight alliances is one way of reducing the rate of bullying in schools.
Measures that the Public Schools have put in Place to ensure the Safety of the Children
Over the last two decades, educators and the lawmakers in public schools have been working tirelessly making sure that the children from that LGBT community get equal treatment as the straight students (Mobley & Johnson, 2015). They have realized that they have a role to play as far as the safety of those students is concerned. For that reason, they have come up with policies which make sure that the vulnerable population receives a fair treatment in schools. Additionally, they have also been addressing the issues of the LGBT community putting aside their personal opinions making sure that they create a secure environment for the children (Gasman & Commodore, 2013). Enough information about the LGBT community must be provided in the school to cater for the needs of those students.
Schools can also address the issue of discrimination against the LGBT community by punishing the offenders in the early stages. The early sta...
