A Comparison: Lewin’s and Rogers’ Change Theories.
Change is driven by a change agent who can either be a nurse leader or staff nurse whose primary objective is to institute nursing practice changes that impact nursing service quality (Mitchell, 2013). In the nursing profession, change is obtained through the use of change theories such as Lewin’s, Rogers’ and Spradley's Change Theories. Thus it is imperative that an appropriate change theory be selected for use by change agents since not all change theories can be applied in every change situation. The essay compares two nursing change theories namely Kurt Lewin’s and Rogers’ Change Theories and will further discuss their suitability in the implementation of my nurse bullying EBP project.
Lewin’s Change theory is the most commonly used nursing theory. It is divided into three distinct stages namely Unfreezing, Moving Stage and Refreezing (Shirey, 2013). The theory largely underpinned by two types of forces: driving and resistant forces which must be present. The driving forces are actually the change agents who can be either nurse leaders or staff nurses whose mandate is to provide direction and impetus for change, whereas resistant forces comprise of nurses or other healthcare employees who oppose the proposed change. For change to take place, the driving forces must supersede the opposing forces (Shirey, 2013).
