Business Ethics Project: Amazon
Introduction
Amazon, one of the biggest tech giants has been courting federal business in recent years, with the latest being the Pentagon’s Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI). Together with Microsoft, Amazon are the finalists for the colossal cloud-computing contract in the face of possible ethical violations (McKinnon, 2019). Earlier, Google had dropped its interest in the $10 billion contract, citing that JEDI did not align with its AI principles. This is both interesting and controversial ethical issue since the company has increasingly been advancing its cooperation with the United States military. Employees at Google have opposed the contract and its collaboration with the US government in executing AI weapons program (Murgia & Shrikanth, 2019). For instance, Jack Poulson, a former professor at Stanford had resigned from his job at Google since he was opposed to “Project Dragonfly”, a program aimed at developing a Chinese censored search engine. According to Poulson, such a move to design the project contravened human rights. There have been huge divisions among tech companies over the use of AI with leading AI research companies such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft taking different stances (Murgia & Shrikanth, 2019). The companies are divided on whether tech companies should develop technologies that could ultimately be used for surveillance and military purposes. While Google has maintained it will not allow the government use its facial recognition technology, Amazon and Microsoft sell these services to US government.
