I have gained a lot of knowledge from the article titled Ethics in Negotiation: Oil and Water or Good Lubrication (Reitz et al. 1998). In this case, the major conflict is inter-group conflict in which some workers are against the union representative and vice versa. I have found that a couple of employees are worried about losing their jobs or a reduction in wages. The most effective conflict management style I would opt for is collaboration. I will encourage the union representative to collaborate and communicate with all of the workers rather than giving tough times to someone and favoring the others. It is obvious that the management wants to see the company grow, and this will be possible only when everyone works toward a common goal and no conflicts like this come across.
In this case, the main challenge to effective communication is that the union representative is not ready to listen to anyone. Issues like name-calling, divisiveness, unnecessary arguments, and occasional profanity are common. The only way to address these issues is to encourage the union representative to discuss matters professionally and nicely. They need not get rude with anyone, as this may lead the management to find their alternative. A friendly environment has to be created in order to make effective communication possible. Ideally, the management should arrange regular meetings with the union representative and should ask them to avoid behaving abnormally, or else, they will be fired from the company.
