Prejudice, discrimination, and racism in the current American society
Prejudice and discrimination by color and or opinions held are not new issues in American society. Accordingly, discrimination is wrong since it does not make anyone less of a human being (American in this case) to hold a different perspective from another (Trepagnier 2). It is a free country, and people should be freely allowed to express their opinions as long as it does not interfere with the civil rights of others. Equally, it is offensive to prejudge other people based on an assumption held by an individual (or any other common assumption). Statements such as “laziness is a trait in blacks” bring about prejudgment on an entire race, and especially when they come from vocal leaders such a Trump. In turn, the affected group would be denied opportunities and looked down upon because of their apparent lazy character, which may not be true in most cases. Persons in a position of power and influence should intervene on the openly ongoing prejudice and discrimination, and speak against it. Particularly, lawmakers should act on this issue by promoting and enacting laws that discourage and would possibly stop discrimination.
It is such prejudice and discrimination against minority groups that have largely contributed to racism. Racism cases have intensified within the United States after the 2016 elections and the consequent election of president Donald Trump. In his campaign, Trump constantly highlighted the issue of racism, and this contributed to institutional racism. This factor brought about discrimination and a form of segregation in American society which is extensively multi-racial.
