In Volume one of History of Modern Architecture by Leonardo Benovolo (1960) the architecture and industrial revolution are analyzed in details between the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV in France and the change in Roman Baroque in 1730 with Clement XII. During this time, old monuments were to be identified precisely rather than the conventional vague approximation used by earlier architects. It’s during this time that the first excavations were carried out at Herculaneum (1711), the Palatine, Hadrian Villa at Tivoli (1734), Pompeii (1748): the first systematic reliefs were published hence scholars had an avenue to experience Greek art (Gronovious 1720), Early Christian art (Boldetti 1720), Etruscan art (Gori 1734) and more so prehistoric art.
