History of the Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower is an iron structure situated at the Camp de Mars in Paris. The tower derived its name from the engineer, Gustave Eiffel, whose company was involved with its designing and construction (Poulin 42). Standing at 1,063 feet, the Eiffel Tower is one of the most renowned and important landmarks in the country. It is locally referred to as La Dame de Fer or the Iron Lady depicting its iconic symbol of the industrial revolution of the country. Today, the tower has become a major tourist attraction in France, drawing more than 7 million visitors every year. By looking back from the day of its construction to the modern day when the tower is highly regarded as an important monument in the country, this paper seeks to give a brief discussion of the history of the Eiffel tower.
Constructed in 1889, the Eiffel Tower was a symbolic mark for the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris that served to celebrate the 100 anniversary of the country’s industrial revolution (Ferguson 226). After its completion, the tower became the world’s tallest man-made structure, a title it held for forty-one years. The tower structure was designed and engineered by two men, Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier. The construction tender was awarded to the Eiffel’s company after emerging with the best design from the more than 100 artists who had submitted competing plans for the tower. The design of the tower demanded the use of 18,000 pieces of puddle iron and 2.5 million rivets. Initially, many artists in the country demonstrated for the construction process to be stopped citing its feasibility (History.com).
