1 Based on your past experience in the nursing profession and your more recent course work in the graduate nursing program did you feel prepared for this experience?
Yes. My knowledge and experience in nursing made me feel amply prepared for this digital learning experience. Regardless of the virtual medium in which the medical care is administered, I felt nevertheless comfortable in the skill and body of knowledge that I possess concerning nursing practice. If preparedness is to be measured in one’s ability to clearly grasp, understand, answer, and respond to questions, then I can say that I felt sufficiently prepared for the experience.
2 What past experiences have you had with digital simulated learning?
I have had some experience with digital simulated learning, such as handling situations with virtual patients wherein I am required to render nursing advice and consultation. However, considering the relative novelty of the medium, I find myself appreciating as unique every single digital simulated learning experience I have underwent. The transfer to digital modes of learning is fairly new and relatively challenging to most persons, and the writer is of no exception, however such digital mode of learning provides as much opportunities as it provides challenges CITATION Hof18 \l 1033 (Hofmeyer, et al., 2018).
3 What were your most challenging moments during the patient encounters?
The lack of non-verbal communication; not being able to see the patient face to face and observe his or her physical responses and general demeanor to whomever he is talking to is a major challenge in digital simulated learning experiences. Non-verbal communication is a very important factor to consider when giving advice or administering care to patients. Digital simulated learning has a tendency to dehumanize the nurse-patient interaction due to the interactions being mostly confined to words on screens.
Also, the lack of opportunity to physically inspect the patient in order to more concisely and properly diagnose him or her for his or her medical or general needs is a major challenge in formulating a proper diagnosis.
