Effective hospital risk management program basically entails risk assessment, remediation, auditing, response and reporting. These steps, if carried out appropriately, could help attain the desired outcomes in preventing risk infections (Moran, 2012). A health care provider was interviewed to determine how a healthcare organization could prevent the spread of infectious diseases in the hospital. Basing on the results of the interview, my impression of the hospital’s risk management is provided.
There are a number of challenges which the healthcare organization faces in controlling infectious illnesses. These include hand washing and the failure of some healthcare workers (HCWs) to observe proper hand hygiene practices thereby resulting in the spread of nosocomial infections; infection outbreaks in the hospital and strategies of avoiding them; and the risks for the hospitals personnel, for instance hemorrhagic fevers, SARS, tuberculosis, HIV and hepatitis. Other challenges include the crisis caused by the emergence of specific multi-resistant pathogens; the need for continuous application of guidelines; food/water in the healthcare organization as possible reservoirs of nosocomial pathogens; and the practice of high-risk surgical operations without a sufficient number of trained workforce, protective items, and efficient laboratories.
The strategies which the organization uses in its infection control program include ensuring that the healthcare workers wash their hands regularly considering that about 40% of hospital-acquired infections are as a result of poor hand hygiene by health care workers (Moran, 2012). Furthermore, the hospital ensures that all the staff members at the hospital wear protective gloves and garments whenever they work with patients. Invasive procedures at the healthcare organization increase the risk of catching hospital-acquired infections. As such, the hospital’s management also ensures that non-invasive procedures are utilized whenever possible.
