Were it not for the health assessment course; it would have been hard for me to understand how to analyze a patient’s health condition. In reality, before starting the course, I knew nothing about health assessments. By pursuing the course, I have increased my confidence level. I can now evaluate patients’ skin, vital symptoms in various illnesses, pathophysiology, circulatory, and respiratory systems with ease. Besides, I have practiced performing the above procedures on primary residents and my classmates. Most importantly, by analyzing vital signs, I can tell when an individual requires extra attention. The health assessment course is crucial and has enabled me to learn many significant things.
The health assessment course has improved my self-awareness of non-verbal and verbal communication. I have learned that the behavior of health professionals significantly influences a patient’s recovery process. As a nurse, I always ensure to understand the sick individual well to avoid hurting them unknowingly. In particular, one has to deal with patients from different cultures and ethnicities. Therefore, using non-verbal cues can create conflicts and confusion since they might have different meanings across cultures. For this reason, I have learned it is crucial to know patients’ beliefs to improve one’s communication with them. Consequently, effective communication between a caregiver and patient hastens the recovery process.
Before taking the course, I was naпve in assessing a patient. I did not understand that one should emphasize assessment results since they guide a health professional when suggesting the most appropriate medical procedure.
