Chronic diseases are controllable but not curable long-lasting medical conditions that. Chronic diseases accounts for 70 percent of all deaths cases in the U.S, The Center for Managing Chronic Disease (2011). Chronic diseases are a major causes of morbidity and disability in places where infectious diseases are prevalent. Common chronic diseases include cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, stroke and chronic lung disease. This paper addresses various causes of chronic disease. It also discusses some preventive efforts to control chronic diseases with emphasis on diabetes.
Chronic diseases have emerged in recent decades because of changing lifestyles and environments around us.The major causes of chronic diseases include the use of tobacco, lack of physical exercise, weight gain and diet. Diet is a major cause of chronic diseases. The modern eating habit has does no consider the importance of diet on human health. People nowadays go for fast foods such as colas, crisps and fries in fast food joints. Fast foods have a high saturation of sugar, fat and sodium which have fatal health consequences. Processed food sales are drastically increasing compared to the sales of vegetables and fruits. Poor diet is a leading cause of diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular and obesity conditions.According to Myoclinc (2004), cholesterol in meat, eggs and fried foods the leading causes of chronic heart conditions. Processed refined flour increases symptoms of diabetes.
Smoking tobacco increases the intake of carcinogens. According to Myoclinc (2004), intake of carcinogen causes cancer. The most carcinogenic associated cancers are cancers of the mouth, larynx, lung, esophagus, bladder and pancreas. Cancer damage body cells and account majority of the fatal chronic diseases.
