Environmental, physiologic, environmental, psychosocial, and economic crises, stressors, and transitions are inevitable in life. In that light, I have learned that the most significant thing that makes children and their families cope with such changes is by understanding their risks, strengths, and protective factors. I ensure that a family knows how to eliminate threats to physical health. In addition, I incorporate relevant pathophysiologic and physiologic concepts into the nursing process. For example, if a family has strong beliefs in religion or community members, encouraging church or community support groups to become a strength to be incorporated into the nursing process.
I believe that I demonstrate therapeutic communication when dealing with children, families, and youth professionally. I also do it when interacting with my nursing colleagues. Besides, a therapeutic relationship is significant in the nursing practice and requires investment from the service user and nurse (Wright, 2021). I have learned that children and their families cannot share vital information if they do not trust a caregiver. However, therapeutic communication creates a trusting relationship where a nurse gets the opportunity to listen to what a specific family is going through without being interrupted. Moreover, I assure my clients that all the information they share is confidential and private.
I believe that synthesizing culturally and developmentally appropriate nursing interventions is essential when handling children, youth, and their families. The best way to do this is by implementing health-related teachings for children and their families by using culturally relevant strategies. I usually call it the culturally sensitive medical services or education program (McGregor et al., 2020). For instance, before I handle health problems in a specific family, I familiarize myself with its cultural practices, beliefs, and norms. That way, I understand things I can and cannot do to avoid unnecessary conflicts. In the long run, I win the hearts of family members and apply the relevant nursing interventions to address their existing or potential health issues.
In some cases, it is challenging to understand the health problems of children and their families. That is why it is crucial to adapt nursing roles to foster, restore, and maintain health by considering a family’s contexts and transitions. I have realized that the best way to know...
