Question 1
I have always perceived society as complex and dynamic. As a result, my passion for acquiring a deeper understanding of this aspect has driven me to pursue a major in Sociology. Throughout my studies and external experiences, I have also been interacting with diverse aspects to prepare me for upper-division courses. Although some have been planned, others are spontaneous. Sociologists explore the contexts of societies, civilizations, groups, and communities and how humans interact within them. Since most human activities are arguably social, I understand that sociology covers everything from the close family, the wider society, religion, sexual orientation, gender, race, class differences, and cultural dimensions.
Recently, I was introduced to preparatory courses, including social problems and social research. The contexts covered in these classes were transformative in my career choices because they enabled me to understand the dynamic nature of social issues. For instance, I recognize the many places I can work as a sociologist because social issues extend to economic, political, and environmental spheres. My increased awareness of the highlighted concepts has been fundamental in directing me towards this major and upper-division courses. I feel that will ease my ability to learn and improve my knowledge further.
My increased understanding of sociology-related approaches has enabled me to induce life-changing impacts outside the school. For instance, I recently applied the knowledge of the need for overcoming sexual orientation barriers by assisting one of my Muslim gay friends to come out in front of her family. It was challenging to confront her religiously conservative family to embrace her personality and understand her orientation. However, I explained to her the value of overcoming her fear and not denying her identity. I assisted her in understanding that she should give her family a chance to understand her as an individual. I gained this awareness through the acquired knowledge of society’s dynamic changes and why families accept such individuals. Moreover, I shared knowledge on LGBT parenting learnt in a short course with my friend’s parents to enhance their acceptance.
Question 2
As a research-savvy student, I learned that numerous learning opportunities exist within the online sphere. For instance, when education shifted to online learning from the conventional classroom sessions, I took advantage of a seminar to expand my knowledge within the sociology niche. The forum ran for four consecutive days and did not require registration or admission fees but only passion for participating. It was open to scholars, students, and professionals from the social science industry. The event was eye-opening since the speakers offered insights into how sociology teaching occurs in schools and colleges. Its information was worthwhile because it enabled me to gain a life-changing view of sociology majors in school and related aspects. The professional speakers elaborated on social problems, theoretical basis, historical narratives, and conventional sociology. In addition, they discussed areas such as religion and society, sociological law, economic and political sociology, and environme...
