3. What is Ritzer’s McDonaldization thesis? Which prominent sociologist’s idea does he use? Critically evaluate Ritzer’s thesis.
Ritzer’s McDonaldization thesis reiterates Max Weber’s, a sociologist, concept concerning the inevitable movement of formal rationality that succeeded in the development of bureaucracy is correct. McDonald's fast-food has predicted how a system will work in a society, based on predictability, competence, quantification, and domination over nonhuman technology over human technology. Consumers are turned into unpaid laborers, and the company's actions become calculable or quantifiable, thereby making these precise. By contrast, these are followed by a series of irrationalities that ultimately defeat one company's original objectives. Eventually, it leads to an irrational dehumanization of people and the opposed consequences, such as inefficiency and damage to human health such as the increase in the number of people suffering from co-morbidities like hypertension and high cholesterol at an early age and the long lines in drive-thru as opposed to the proposed efficiency (Ritzer, 1998).
