After watching the documentary Colonization Road by Ryan McMahon, it is evident that Canadians should formulate a strategy aimed at reconciliation without recollection. Through the documentary, Ryan asserts that humans have a long way to ensure they realize true reconciliation. Ensuring that all persons living in Canada have equal access to resources, such as roads and modern health care facilities, are some ways of promoting reconciliation. For example, the Canadian federal, provincial, and municipal governments are working to build a bridge that will connect the people of Shoal Lake 40 to the Trans-Canada Highway. Establishing the bridge will grant the people of Shoal Lake 40 an opportunity to live without risks and ultimately to reconciliation.
Understanding and valuing Canada’s history is another way of promoting true reconciliation. The documentary shows that only a few Canadians understand their history, making it challenging to enhance true reconciliation (McMahon). Ryan’s documentary illustrates that we must cease taking what we have for granted and focus on uniting the bloc. Fostering all Canadians’ unity without sidelining other communities is an excellent way of enhancing true reconciliation (McMahon). Although creating a road that connects Shoal Lake 40 is likely to promote true reconciliation, humans will need to ensure that happens. One of the government’s strategies to enhance true reconciliation is by paying the community a visit and listening to their concerns.
