One of the most predominant challenges facing families today is substance abuse among their children and more so those in their teenage phase. The gradual transition to adulthood comes with major concerns as adolescents are keen on gaining more control particularly concerning their parents who have been issuing them with instructions since their childhood. In this case, their proliferation to drugs is one approach in which they endear to elicit command of their lives. The prevalence of drug consumption in modern society has compelled concerned stakeholders to determine the various metrics surrounding this behavior. Similarly, Williams and his colleagues (2018) have made efforts to ascertain how adolescents gain access to alcohol and tobacco. However, they have made efforts to substantiate the differences that arise among youths in rural and urban areas when it comes to these drug abuse.
The researchers were keen to deduce the best results possible in the process. To this end, they used the survey method consisting of 445 youths “representing 30 different communities in the central United States (U.S.) region” (p. 406). The survey considered the demographics, 30-day use measures, and questions about points-of-access for alcohol and tobacco as very important elements in the survey. The responses from these major items would serve to establish the adolescents’ point of access for alcohol and tobacco and more importantly, indicate whether demographics mattered in accessing them.
