Parenting is among the most important aspects of human development as it largely defines the kind of personality and individual develops in adulthood. Every parent wants his/her child to develop the best personality as soon as the children reach adulthood. However, questions are raised on the ideal parenting practices for the insightful, responsible, athletic, or educated adults of the future. Even more challenging is whether a particular parenting technique is ideal for specific situations or parents. Authors such as Priyanka Sharma-Sindhar, Clair Cain, and Karen Fancher have developed analytical insights through different publications to define different parenting techniques and their possible impacts. This essay synthesizes inputs by Priyanka Sharma-Sindhar, Clair Cain, and Karen Fancher in pieces “Being an Elephant Mom in the Time of the Tiger Mother,” “Parents are Robbing Their Children of Adulthood,” and “The Rise of the Lawnmower Parent” discretely to give insights into the benefits and drawbacks of various parenting techniques. Based on the authors' inputs, parents should find harmony between helicopter and lawnmower techniques to steer their children towards both independence and interdependence as they become adults.
The debate on the parenting technique to choose for children should focus on what the parents want to nurture in those children.
