Basic Universal Healthcare
The United States of America (USA) should copy and improve Canada's healthcare sector. Specifically, basic universal healthcare coverage should be a right for all Americans regardless of their social statuses. In 2017, Canada spent 10.4% of its gross domestic product (GDP) to provide "Medical for All," and the USA spent 17.2% of its GDP (CNBC). Based on these percentages, it shows that the USA spends more money on healthcare expenditures and does not meet the medical needs of all of its citizens.
The functionalist theory shows that distinctive societal entities are interdependent, and their proper relationship contributes to the proper functioning of society (Dillon 35). As such, the government has roles to play to ensure that its citizens get high-quality medical services. All individuals have the right to be treated well in healthcare facilities. Most importantly, the USA needs to imitate what Canada is doing in the healthcare sector to promote the accessibility of medical services and foster the welfare of all Americans.
