Week 3 Assignment - Conflicting Viewpoints Essay: Part 1
The assignment is divided into two parts: the prewriting paper (Part 1) due this week, and the essay (Part 2) due in Week 5.
Overview
When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view?
This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking by playing the "Believing Game." The Believing Game is about making the effort to "believe," or at least consider, the reasons for an opposing view on an issue.
Instructions
In the Week 2 Discussion, you examined the biases discussed in Chapter 2 of the webtext and reviewed one of the topics from Pros & Cons of Controversial Issues. You may use the same topic from this discussion or find another:
Select one of the topics from Pros & Cons of Controversial Issues, state your position on the issue, and identify three premises (reasons) listed under either the Pro or Con section—whichever section opposes your position.
For the three premises (reasons) that oppose your position on the issue, answer these “believing” questions suggested by Elbow:
What's interesting or helpful in this view?
What would I notice if I believed this view?
In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?
Read the excerpt about critical thinking processes: The Believing Game and How to Make Conflicting Opinions More Fruitful [PDF].
Engage in prewriting to examine your thoughts.
The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:
Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.
Address the main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.
This prewriting assignment has no page requirement.
There is no requirement at this time to include references in the assignment.

Conflicting Viewpoints Essay
Student’s Name:
Institution:
The topic of whether college athletes should be paid or not is quite controversial and has elicited different reactions from people. On the one hand, there are those supporting the idea of college athletes being paid due to the huge amount of money they bring to the institutions. On the other hand, some argue against it, stating that college sports provide platforms for young athletes to go professional. Like most controversial issues, people pick sides that they feel most comfortable with and ignore the other side without finding out why they hold their views regarding the matter. I support the idea of college athletes being paid for their participation in sports that earn their institutions money because it is only fair for the effort and sacrifices made.
In opposing the idea of college athletes to be paid, various reasons have been provided, but only three will be considered for this argument. One of the reasons states that scholarships provided to college athletes are fair financial compensations, and most college sports departments are underfinanced to pay students. The second reason states that few college athletes will go pro; therefore, they should take advantage of the education being offered as compensation for playing for their colleges. The third reason against college athletes being paid is that the payment of college athletes is not the solution to the real problem. The real problem with college sports is that the system for American amateur sports is broken (ProCon, 2021).
Based on the provided opposing ideas along with the explanations, various interesting aspects emerge. One of the interesting aspects is that the explanations provided make sense even to me who opposes their arguments, and the more they use facts and data to support their explanations, I realize that I may end up believing both sides. Therefore, looking at the issue from this view, it is easy to understand why they have a strong stand against the payment of college athletes. If I did not have a stand on the issue then am presented with the arguments from the opposing side, I would have easily supported their beliefs and opinions in regards to the issue. It was also interesting that I had never taken time to explore what the o...
