Clique Dynamic among School Children Summary
Children’s lives are dominated by clique structures that form the foundation of their relationships and consequently, their social world. Each child is forced to join friendship circles to enjoy a mutual connection with like-minded peers. Although these cliques are meant to create a sense of belonging for their members, they have hierarchical structures with highly manipulative leaders who use their power and political-like maneuverability to exert their influence over their “friends” (Adler & Adler, 173). The leaders and other members of cliques utilize various techniques to ensure continuity of the group, including recruitment (Adler & Adler, 174), application (Adler & Adler, 175), friendship realignment (Adler & Adler, 176), out-group subjugation (Adler & Adler, 179), and in-group subjugation (Adler & Adler, 181). Thus, cliques become the primary source of socialization that determines children’s behavior and interaction patterns.
Gender Role Portrayal and the Disney Princesses Summary
Gender role is among the dominant themes in Disney Princess movies. In the first assortment of Disney Princess movies, the men were portrayed as masculine, strong, athletic, brave, and assertive; whereas women were portrayed as weak, submissive, emotional, fearful, and affectionate (England et al., 559). Consequently, women assumed domestic roles like cooking and cleaning, while men became conquerors and explorers. In later movies, women assumed traditional masculine traits such as bravery and assertiveness while men adopted androgynous attributes like naivety and incompetence (England et al., 563). As a result, women moved away from their traditional gender roles in the kitchen and became heroines in the movies. The implication of this portrayal is that the exposure may lead to gender acquisition among children. England et al. (566) posit that continuous depictions of gender roles contribute to children’s understanding of gender. Thus, media exposure may contribute to a child’s concept of social behavior and norms through gender roles.
