Review Letter to the Editor of a Journal of Medical Science

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

The paper will take the format of a letter to the editor written in response to a biomedical research paper of your choosing that deals with a racial disparity in health.
1. Please select a paper from PubMed or Google Scholar that claims a racial difference in a disease or health outcome.
2. Choose a paper that either explicitly or implicitly attributes the disparity to genetic or biological differences between races.
3. Explain (politely) in your 3 page max (double spaced) letter to the editor any critiques you have about the study design and/or interpretations.
Be sure to clarify whether you think they adequately controlled for all necessary social factors that may alternatively explain the disparity, and what you think could be done to their paper, or papers in general, to improve on future studies of racial disparities in health.
Notes:
Could you please provide me A 1-paragraph synopsis of your proposed letter by March 3rd? Only one paragraph is fine(Please include a hyperlink to the article you wish to critique, along with a few sentences of the primary critiques you plan to make on the article. We will send you our approval on your choice within a few days so you can proceed with writing. )
Here is an example: article by Chang and Non 2021 Am J Respir Crit Care Med. 203(3):397-398.

You should find an article first then wrote some letters like the example below:
(example of paper) https://pubmed(dot)ncbi(dot)nlm(dot)nih(dot)gov/33125257/
The best letters will be considered for submitting to the journals if you’d like to continue working on it beyond the end of the quarter. (e.g. One student summer 2020 published her letter with me in a highly ranked medical journal -

Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to share my critical response to a biomedical study conducted to analyze the role of genetic disparity in the pattern of the natural history of heart failure response to treatment drugs and devices. A group of biomedical experts conducted the study, and a renowned international journal, JACC Journals, published this study in 2014 in the Heart Failure section.
The study involves the review of literature of new and existing to analyze and interpret genetic variation between people of African ancestry (AA) and people of European ancestry (EA) since, on account of the evolutionary pattern, Homo sapiens originated in Africa and, therefore, African population displays more genetic variation as compared to the newly evolved people of European ancestry. Another study found out more proportion of harmful gene mutation in the African population than in other human populations (Lohmueller et al., 2008). In one study conducted on genetic data collected from different races, it was found that human genetic variation is dependent on the geographical distribution of human races (Jorde & Wooding, 2004). The focal point of the study is to find out the effects of genetic disparity in the two populations on the frequency of heart failure and response to remedial measures, including drug therapy and devices to treat cardiovascular failure (Taylor et al., 2014).
In this review study, although the authors do not provide a specific definition of a race, the text implies that the establishment of a race is specifically based on genetic differences and similarities and the frequency of genetic variation among two distinct groups of Homo sapiens. In this regard, the study disregards using phenotypical characteristics to determine race and relies more on the pattern of disease risk and prognosis as valid criteria to differentiate between two races. Therefore, the study relies on the use of change in disease patterns to differentiate between humans of African origin and non-African European humans (Taylor et al., 2014).
However, the study does not take into account any specific social, behavioral patterns or social factors that may or may not shape a human type as a separate race. This ignorance of social factors and behavior is a positive aspect of the study as the use of social behavior can lead to an impression of racial prejudice and hatred.
One positive aspect of this review is that in this review study, the authors explicitly explain the history of the argument that explains the role of genetic variations in the outcome or occurrence of a health problem. In addition, the study also provides three parameters to estimate the effects of genetic variations, including frequency in polymorphism, the difference in allele frequency of the polymorphism, and the extent of polymorphism on the therapeutic phenotype (Taylor et al., 2014). This elaboration of the parameters asso...
