Endemic Species
Definition of Endemic Species and Its Importance
Endemic species refer to animals and plants that are only found in a specific geographical region. The geographical region might be a country, island, or continent. In particular, a proper understanding of endemic species enables people to protect and preserve such animals and plants. Since these species are found in specific locations, it means they are highly endangered. They are usually restricted to a particular region and are isolated in some way.
Endemic species cannot spread to other regions, which increases their chances of extinction. One of the things that make endemic species to be confined in a particular region is the type of food they eat. For instance, some animals eat specific types of plants that are not found in many parts of the world. In that case, such animals are found closer to their source of food. Similarly, specific plants can only grow in a particular region where there is a favorable type of soil and climate.
Due to the inability to live or grow in new habitats, endemic species are at a high risk of extinction, particularly if they are affected by diseases or their ecosystems are threatened. In some cases, invasive species might enter the habitats of endemic species, hence reducing their population significantly. Good examples of endemic species are the Asiatic lions, which are found in Gir forest national park, Gujarat, and the Sangai deers found in Keibul Lamjao National Park, Manipur (Zhao et al., 2019). By understanding the animals and plants that comprise of endemic species, it might be easy for people to safeguard their habitats. That way, these organisms will be available and be seen by many upcoming generations.
How Endemic Species Affect Living Beings and Physical Environment
Endemic species significantly affect living things due to their state of inflexibility in a specific region. Humans have the responsibility to protect the habitats where these animals and plants flourish since they are endangered species. For example, when individuals are considering the forests where they should get wood and timber for building their shelters, they should not encroach in forests that act as home to endemic species. If endemic species’ habitats are destroyed, these animals and plants will be left to die since they cannot adapt to other geographical regions (Rossini et al., 2018). Consequently, humans should always emphasize safeguarding ecosystems that act as habitats for endemic species to avoid extinction.
Endemic species affect other animals as well apart from humans. For example, some of them depend on other creatures or plants for food. Hence, eliminating the source of foo...
