Organic Molecules of Zinc in Plants
Zinc is important nutritional supplement for proper functioning of cells in human body CITATION May14 \l 1033 (Mayo‐Wilson, et al., 2014). It is also required for proper working of immune system and also fosters cell division, cell growth, healing of wounds, and break-down of carbohydrates CITATION Mom17 \l 1033 (Momen‐Heravi, et al., 2017). For proper functioning of senses of smell and taste, one requires a balanced diet with zinc CITATION Can17 \l 1033 (Cantone, et al., 2017). Zinc can be found in both plant and animal based food.
Zinc is also important for plant nutrition. It is required by plants in small quantities, though it is vital for plant development. It is a key component plant proteins and enzymes. It helps in processes like production of growth hormones and elongation inter-nodes CITATION Yan14 \l 1033 (Yang, Tam, & Ye, 2014). Zinc occurs in plants as molecules and compounds. There are several molecules of zinc in plants CITATION Mom17 \l 1033 (Momen‐Heravi, et al., 2017). This article discusses three major molecules: zinc orotate, zinc aspartate, and zinc gluconate. The molecules have better bioavailability compared to their inorganic counterparts.
Zinc orotate molecule is composed of orotic acid molecules and an atom of zinc (Castillo, 2016). Molecular weight is 375.558 g/mol. Chemical formula is given by C10H6N4O8Zn CITATION Cas16 \l 1033 (Castillo, 2016). Sources include cashew nuts, almonds, kidney beans and flounder. Molecular structure is as shown in Figure 1 below.

Previous research found out that zinc in the form of zinc orotate is more bio-available to the human body than other forms such as carbonates, chlorides and sulphates of zinc (Castillo, 2016). This helps to enhance treatment and prevention of diseases. It also helps to protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet radiations (Thompson, Mirza, Park, Qureshi, & Cho, 2017).
