Substance abuse
Substance abuse continues a major cog or hindrance towards the development of measures to improve patient outcomes. In their 19-year study, Hjemsaeter et al. (2019) indicate that alcohol disorder alone continues to increase people’s susceptibility to somatic disease. Smoking has also been directly associated with increased instances of lung cancer. The CDC (2020) reports that smoking is considered “the number one risk factor for lung cancer.” Drug and substance use-associated disorders continue to claim lives in their thousands. Glei and Preston (2020) indicate that in 2016 alone, the U.S. suffered 141,695 deaths associated with drugs. Such cases will continue to happen if the scourge that is substance abuse is not dealt with.
Chronic illnesses
Looking at data from the United States alone helps to paint a clearer picture of how chronic illnesses are a major cause of increased morbidity and mortality rates. Raghupthi and Raghupathi (2018) indicate that in the U.S. alone, chronic illnesses “are responsible for seven out of 10 deaths.” Also, the researchers indicate that the total number of deaths as a result of chronic illnesses is 1.7 million. Such numbers are quite high considering they are from a single country. While factoring the world, chronic illnesses continue to be a major cause of increased mortality rates.
Aging population
The aging population is considered vulnerable, and even while fighting Covid-19, the aging population has been a universal responsibility to ensure they are safe. Aging predisposes one to major conditions, including diabetes, depression, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and even cancer. Such conditions happen to inflict a lot of damage to this population, thus leading to increased morbidity and mortality rates.
