A Streetcar Named Desire Critique
Toxic masculinity was typical in most traditional societies (Corrigan, 27). Men were considered the head of the family and the only ones allowed to occupy leadership positions. Men were traditionally expected to exert authority and be in control (Mira, 14). A Streetcar Named Desire shows a perfect example of the toxic masculinity that would be common in traditional times. The example is portrayed by the character Stanley. The play (A Streetcar Named Desire) criticizes toxic masculinity by showing the adverse effects that such behavior has causes.
For the most part, A Streetcar Named Masculinity appears to critique toxic masculinity. In traditional societies, there were norms and expectations based on gender roles. Although some people may view the play as romanticizing Stanley’s hypermasculine behavior and machismo, there are several instances where the play portrays such behavior as a negative trait. Stanley is depicted as a strong and aggressive man. He represents the traditional ideals of masculine expectations. However, the level of aggression, dominance, and control portrayed by Stanley does not aim to praise or support such hypermasculinity. The following is a discussion of instances where the play criticizes toxic masculinity.
First, there are times when Stanley is depicted as overly aggressive and abusive. A perfect example is when it comes to how he deals with his wife. He expects to have great dominion and control over his wife. Therefore, he often becomes aggressive and abusive when he feels that his wife has challenged his authority.
