Independent Living. Video Defiant Lives. Movie Review

Movie Review Instructions:

After completing the assigned readings and watching videos for this week, answer the following question.Your response should be 250-350 words total. Make sure to number your answers.
1) In your own words, describe what independent living (IL) is and why was/is it important for PWD?
2) From the video "Defiant Lives (Links to an external site.)" different countries IL movements were highlighted. Some of these occurred during the same time-frame (1960's and 1970's). However, as we've seen, across the world many PWD still do not have access to choice on how they live their lives. Describe how you think culture and societal views toward PWD impacts views toward IL for PWD (in all aspects of independence and ability to make decisions and have equal rights)?
3) What does "nothing about us without us" mean and why is it important to the IL movement?
4) Do you feel the film "Rory O'Shea Was Here (Links to an external site.)" does a good job of dismantling the attitude of "pity"? Why or why not?
5) Think about your average day. How many decisions do you make regarding what to eat and when..What classes can you take...What you want to do for recreation...Where you want to work...Where you want to live. Now think about how often across the world PWD do not have the right to make their own decisions. If you were unable to have choice over your daily activities and decisions that impact your life, how would that make you feel?

Among people in geriatric care, IL is a critical step in the continuum of care which is followed by assisted living (DiGennaro Reed et al 72). IL is important to PWD since they lack the freedom to choose where they reside or live with. Therefore, moving PWD to nursing facilities is one of the service options for this special population.
From the video “Defiant Lives”, there is a negative attitude towards disability due to culture and societal views and this impacts the views towards IL for PWD in the United States, Britain, and Australia. Sarah Barton made a video about disability and the rise and fight PWD’s rights movements in the three countries. The men and women in the film depict negligence from society as they move from disability institutions to fight for control and independence in their lives (Barton np). They move from these institutions as they feel imprisoned and want a freer and ordinary life with their families and friends.
