Advancing Africa’s Nutrition Agenda
The African continent consists of developing countries that cannot fully sustain their agriculture and nutrition sectors. This has led to poor sector performance despite the continent being vast and most fertile, thus conducive for agriculture. The video discusses Africa’s nutritional agenda aiming at ensuring nutrition and food security. The interviewee, Boitshepo Bibi Giyose, is a senior officer in the nutrition and food system in NEPAD. She gives three major agendas that NEPAD aims at enforcing to ensure nutrition and food security in Africa. They are political commitment, integrating nutrition in all development plans, and providing advancement in nutritional investment. Potential problems that may affect implementing these proposed nutritional agendas are political instability, the continent’s overdependence on foreign loans and grants, which often come with conditions, and heightened corruption cases in the African countries. Solving these problems will need dedication to ending corruption, fair negotiations with donors and lenders, and a centralized continental nutrition oversight body.
Africa is a third-world country whose political atmosphere is not stable. Most general elections are faced with rigging cases that lead to post-election violence. This violence affects the production cycle because people cannot work under unsafe conditions. Similarly, this unstable political atmosphere prevents the formulation and implementation of agricultural, nutrition, and food security policies.
