3. Reflect on what you learned from the movie, compare it to your literature search. Then create an artifact that accurately answers the questions below. In recent years, mental illness has been acknowledged as an important aspect of well-being, treating it as having the same significance as that of physical, emotional, and social well-being. As a matter of fact, mental illness has been portrayed in some movies in the past decade, one of which is Inside Out (2015).
The leading mental illness that was depicted by Riley, the protagonist in the movie, is Major Depressive Disorder (Langley, 2015). It was accurately exemplified by showing the chronological major life events that changed Riley’s perception of the world. When Riley and her parents moved to San Francisco and left Minnesota, where she grew up with her hockey team, she felt alone and abandoned, especially since her parents were also stressed about these major life events (IMDb, n.d.). With this feeling of abandonment, Riley had slowly withdrawn from the outside world. Her emotions jumped constantly from anger, sadness, joy, fear, and disgust. Her joy ceaselessly competed with sadness.
Over time, sadness overcame joy and ultimately, this emotion turned into apathy. Apathy is one of the pathognomonic symptoms of major depressive disorder as seen in DSM-V where the individual must be experiencing five or more symptoms during the same 2-week period and at least one of the symptoms which should either be depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure.
