Digestive System and Urinary System: Lab Report
Introduction
This laboratory session aims to identify different parts of the digestive and urinary systems and their functions in humans. The report presents the two systems involved in the breakdown of food, absorption of nutrients, and eventual elimination of wastes from the body. Using models provided, the results of different parts of the systems involved in these critical processes and their functions are shown in Figures 1 and 2 below.
Methods/Procedure
1 Students were presented with two models to represent the digestive and urinary systems in humans
2 The instructor pointed to different parts of the models, and students were required to identify each of the parts by name and describe their functions.
Results
The first model was the digestive system with different organs that facilitate the breakdown of food and absorption of nutrients. The second model was the urinary system that eliminates the waste from the body. Results showed that the main organs of the digestive systems in humans include the mouth, salivary glands, pharynx, esophagus, liver, gallbladder, stomach, pancreas, small and large intestines, rectum, and anus (Digestive system and urinary system (Class notes)). The urinary system consists of different organs, including the kidney, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra.

Fig 2 Function of the urinary system (Source: Digestive system and urinary system (Class notes))
Discussion
The Digestive System
The role of the mouth is to break down food particles, and apart from its involvement in the digestion of food, the mouth is critical for producing spoken language through the vocal cords or folds. Salivary glands secrete saliva that moistens and lubricate food, making it easier for swallowing by the pharynx a...
