Previously, people in America have climbed up the social ladder relative to their racial background. This was the case during the industrial ages and the ages before that, the races meant more than any skills one had to offer. As such, most of the lucrative employment opportunities were distributed among the whites while races such as the African American had to scramble for the rest of the redundant ones with other minorities(Wilson 2003).
