Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo`s experiment of Conformity
Milgram is known for his obedience experiment. In his work, he experimented on the effect of punishment on obedience. He checked the level of willingness of human beings to take commands that contrast their own beliefs in which he found out that many people obey the power.
Milgram used forty men of varying professions and ages as subjects, forty victims and an experimenter, and a shock generator (with 30 switches and a Voltage ranging from 15V to 450V). The experimenter gave the subjects the commands. The victims were to do a word matching under the supervision of the subjects. Anytime the victims made a mistake in the word matching, the subjects were to inflict some pain on them using the shock generator, starting from 15V increasing up to 450V using the 30 switches. The subjects did not enjoy inflicting pain on the victims but did it since it was an order.
