Watch the following clip of an episode of Peanuts regarding difficulties with gender identity and how (particularly young) males and females communicate.  In this case (as you'll see in the article), Peppermint Pattie is never really given a "gender identity."  She dresses like a boy, is tough and athletic, and her best friend calls her "sir."
