Gender Stereotypes against Working Women in American Society
Working women encounter various typical stereotypes or biases. Eleanor Tabi Haller gives her experience when she attended an evaluation committee in New York. An African American man came running to her and said, “I am the black, and you must be the woman” (Haller, 2012). Globally, women graduates are hired at a lower level, have fewer job promotions, and have fewer opportunities in terms of equitable compensation due to gender-based stereotypes.
Due to gender stereotypes, females are consistently underrepresented in leadership and upper management. Notably, the behaviors and values associated with effective management are highly correlated with masculine characteristics such as self-reliance, power, assertiveness, and independence. They are inconsistent with stereotypically feminine traits such as caring, helpfulness, and communality (Tinsley, Cheldelin, Schneider, & Amanatullah, 2009).
