Step 1
The passage "learning about gender identity & fairness" indicate that gender identity is a significant concern for young children as they categorize themselves as boys and girls by observing physical differences, such as girls with long hair and boys with short hair. However, gender roles and anatomy are socially and culturally constructed as the adults teach the children how boys and girls are expected to behave. The passage indicates that society should be blamed for biased gender identity based on gender roles because it teaches young children how to act like males and females. For instance, boys grow up knowing they should be strong as society does not expect them to cry (Derman-Sparks & Edwards, 2010, p. 91). Thus, crying is for girls as they are perceived as the weaker gender. The message presented by the article connects with my past experiences as I thought women's role was cooking and men should not enter the cooking area. The message implies that gender identity and gender roles are based on implicit bias.
