In the developed world, high levels of gun violence are a uniquely American problem. This is because no other developed country has such a high rate of gun violence. However, there are commonsense steps that can be used to reduce that rate. Nevertheless, all steps require considering certain truths. Therefore, any discussion about gun violence must realize that guns in the American society will never go away. Thus, rather than enacting laws in congress and senate, gun violence should be seen as a public health issue.
Studies show that 75% of children who have reached school going age can fire a weapon (Kleck, 207). Therefore, pediatricians should be allowed to ask about guns in homes when children are 3 years old and curious about the world. However, some states still limit doctors from talking about guns.
