The Thurman v. Torrington became a landmark case whereby Tracey Thurman sued the Torrington police department for failing to protect her from her husband’s violent acts. Thurman .v. Torrington became the first federal case that resulted in reforms in domestic laws after a Connecticut homemaker Tracey Thurman sued the city police whom failed to protect her as a citizen. The abuse climax became evident when one night Tracey's husband stabbed her 13 times almost killing her before the police took action when it was too late (Death13Cinemas, 2011).
Tracey Thurman reacts to the system's failure to provide adequate protection against her husband
Tracey through her lawyer sued the police department of Torrington for failing to protect her from her husband. Tracey Thurman felt discriminated as a citizen and argued her case in court stating that her constitutional rights had been defiled by the police. The Fourteenth Amendment state that "nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws" (Death13Cinemas, 2011). The court granted Tracy $ 2.3 million compensation for her injuries in which the court also concurred with Tracey that the police failed to arrest the abusive partner, hence failure to provide protection when she needed it (Death13Cinemas, 2011).

Based on Tracey Thurman's lawsuit against the police department, a task force was formed by the governor of Connecticut to respond to domestic violence cases within the state.
