Q: Discuss the notion of “amateurism” in college athletics? In short, do you agree that the NCAA’s definition is good or bad? Why?
The National Collegiate Athletic Association-NCAA’s view of amateurism is that student-athletes are not meant to be paid to play, as this would contravene the main reason for student athletes to be in college athletics, which is receiving higher education. The NCAA restricts student athletes from working outside the program, the levels of scholarships and maximum number (Nocera & Strauss, 2016). The NCAA officials normally view the organization ias one which protects the athletes from exploitation and not an enabler, where students put their education first and yet the athletes bring glory and money to schools with little financial gain the these athletes (Nocera & Strauss, 2016). The NCAA is wrong to define amateurism as being non paid sports among college athletes, who get nothing beyond scholarships.
While NCCA was created in1906, the organization gained more power in 1951 under the leadership of Walter Byers, where many of the rules on amateurism were written, and greater enforcement of these rules adopted (Nocera & Strauss, 2016). Byers was the first to categorize college athletes as student-athletes, meaning states could not classify them as employees and collect a part of their compensation. This ushered an era where commercial licenses were popularized (Nocera & Strauss, 2016). The NCAA’s definition of amateurism is still bad still it places too many restrictions on what college students can engage in depending on whether they make money including signing autographs and using their likenesses..
