Religion was and still is based on a belief system. These religions spread across the continents through trade and cultural interactions. In the long run, even after the collapse of civilizations associated with them, these religions still persisted since they were based on faith rather than a sociopolitical framework. People continued being united by the faith rather than the kinship, during such tough times of collapse of civilizations.
