Journey of the Corps of Discovery Video Segments Response

Essay Instructions:

Lewis and Clark
You should start this lesson by watching the assigned segments from the PBS film Lewis and Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery, embedded below. I suggest that students start with the assigned film segments because they give you a good feel for the environment of the Great Plains, which is an environment that, unlike many of the others we have discussed, few students have experienced. Much of the plant and animal diversity present on the Great Plains prior to European contact is quite rare today. The filmmakers did an excellent job of finding some of the patches of plains habitat still left in America.
Part 1, Chapter 3 – The Garden of Eden (33:22 - 50:56) Part 1, Chapter 4 – “Our Friends”
Instructions
To complete the assignment:
Answer ALL of the following questions in an original post to the discussion forum:
What questions or observations do you have in response to this lesson's videos?
Be sure to incorporate material from the course readings or lessons, or a relevant source, in your initial post. Be sure that it is relevant to your point.
**To receive full participation points, your posts should meet the following criteria:
Posts should be evenly distributed throughout the discussion period (not concentrated all on one day or at the beginning and/or end of the period).
Multiple posts and replies will help your participation grade, but do not guarantee full participation points. Quality is always better than quantity.
Posts should be a minimum of one short paragraph and a maximum of two paragraphs. Be complete, but be concise.
Avoid posts that are limited to "I agree" or "great idea," etc. If you agree (or disagree) with a post then say why you agree by supporting your statement with concepts from the readings or by bringing in a related example or experience.
Comply with instructor's directions to engage new topics or leave worn-out ones that have already been covered.
Address the questions as much as possible (don't let the discussion stray).
Try to use quotes from the readings that support your posts. Cite page numbers when you do this.
Build on others responses to create threads, quoting the portion of the message to which you are responding.
Bring in related prior knowledge (work experience, prior coursework, readings, etc.)
Be respectful when interacting with your classmates and instructors.

Lewis and Clark embarked on a journey in 1803 to the western regions in what came to become the commencement of the American expansionism policy. U.S. President Thomas Jefferson wanted to expand the U.S. to reach the western coast. Therefore, Lewis and Clark prepared themselves by taking short courses on collecting, documenting, and classifying the data they would collect along the way. Such strategies were used by previous European explorers such as Cook and Vancouver (Ronda, 2002). The duo was a reflection of European rationalism. They also represented a capitalistic mindset where the nation was using aggressive territorial ex...
