Across four centuries of United States history, we have interpreted ideas about freedom and liberty in very different ways. This course has explored five critical periods of US history: the Revolutionary era, the Civil War era, the New Deal era, the Civil Rights era, and our own era, still very much informed by the ideas of President Ronald Reagan.
Compose a seven-part essay in which you compare and contrast the ideas of two of these different periods. You choose which two periods to explore. Answer all seven parts, labeling each section “Part 1 - Introduction,” “Part 2,” “Part 3,” etcetera. Give us a general sense that you know basic facts like times, places, laws etc.
Be sure to cite evidence from your Give Me Liberty! textbook, using the same parenthetical references you used in your essays, eg (Give Me Liberty!, 433). When you don't quote, use your own words. Please don't plagiarize.
Part I - Introduction: Begin with a brief introduction explaining which two periods you will explore and why the differences or similarities seem important to you.
Part 2: Explain how freedom/liberty were understood in both of these eras. Describe two ideas about freedom/liberty specific to each of these periods. So, two ideas about period one and two about period two.
Part 3: Describe one key moment from each of these two periods in which leaders articulated critical ideas about freedom and liberty. This could be a speech or famous essay. Describe the essence of their ideas. How were they different from each other? So, one moment from period one and one moment from period two. Two moments, total.
Part 4: Describe two ways that those ideas were implemented during each of those periods. This could be a law or Presidential order or court decision or something similar. So, again, two ways about period one and two about period two.
Part 5: Explain how those implementations changed the USA in both periods. Your explanation should describe one important change for each of the periods you choose. So, one implementation from period one and one from period two. Two moments, total.
Part 6: Identify one specific way that you think that either of these periods did not address the freedom and liberty needs of Americans. So, just one way from either of these periods.
Part 7 – Conclusion: In a brief paragraph, sum up what you think is the essence of the differences between these two periods.
FAQ:
Don’t worry about overlapping/duplicating facts and ideas from one part to another. That’s fine.
Giving us some sense of when things happened, but keep it general. “Around World War I.” “In the mid-1850s.” That sort of reference is fine.

Civil War era
Civil Rights era
The Civil War (1861–1865) took place as the northern and southern states in the US with the southern states intent on advancing states rights including on the issue of slavery (Foner, 2013). The Civil Rights era in the 1950s and 60s focused on desegregation and the end of discrimination against African Americans. In both eras, there was focus on the fight for rights and freedoms, but the Civil Rights ear focused on broad-based rights to all Americans to be treated equally. Part 2:
During the Civil War era, Lincoln and the northerners who were part of the union emphasized political liberty, democracy and self-government. Southerners focused on self-determination and state rights when fighting for freedom. Northerners then also insisted on antislavery as a path to more freedom for the nation where there would be the emancipation of the slaves. During the Civil Rights era, focus included political freedom, integration and the full exercise of democracy were important parts of the civil rights .Dr Marin Luther King and other civil rights activists supported massive nonviolent resistance to call action in support of desegregation

Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on 1st January 1863 declaring that those held as slaves were to be freed and this paved way for the adoption of the 13th amendment, which abolished slavery in 1865 (Foner, 2013).
