Civil Rights Movement
The civil rights movement comprised a struggle by African Americans in the United States who were demanding an end to legalized racial segregation, disenfranchisement, discrimination. It occurred during the 1950s and 1960s and in the end, Blacks were able to get equal rights that were protected by the law. Various individuals and organizations were involved during the civil rights movement, and they ensured its success, such as Ella Baker, A. Philip Randolph, and the NAACP.
Ella Baker was born in December 1903 and is regarded as a hero of the civil rights movement. Her inspiration was her maternal grandmother, who was a slave but declined the get married to the man chosen by her master. She was an influential individual and participated in the organizations that sort to fight the injustices such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Martin Luther King’s Southern Christin Leadership Conference and the NAACP. Her work often focused on supporting student activists since she considered them to be an asset and a resource for the movement. Her leadership roles in various organizations influenced individuals to empower themselves. She was also keen to organize people so that they can lead themselves in the future. Through her efforts, she guided and inspired emerging leaders of the civil rights movement, such as Rosa Parks.
