Article Critique on Biasness
The article 8 For-Profit Colleges collect More Than $1-Billion in Veterans' Education Benefits by Collin Eaton was plainly biased with regard to the statistics given. The article was published in The Chronicle on 22nd September, 2011. A quick summary of the article follows, and then the biasness within the article is pointed out. In the article the author indicated that the colleges had accumulated 1.02 billion dollars in total, in terms of benefits for the education of veterans (Eaton, para. 1).
It was indicated that more than 23% of the benefits had been disbursed as shown in a report by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee (SHELP). For the eight such colleges, the disbursement rate indicated a 159% jump compared to the previous year’s rate. On discussing the report Eaton indicated that the statistics had been part of the findings of an investigation by SHELP on companies offering higher education with profit motives (Eaton, paras. 2-3).
Releasing the findings, the SHELP chair, Tom Harkin, who is a democrat representing Iowa, is reported to have indicated that the companies, or sector as a whole, had engaged in an aggressive recruitment drive for veterans along with members of service who stood to benefit from the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Eaton, para. 3). The SHELP chair is quoted as having indicated that the committee was surprised that the sector which would conventionally try to find favor with Wall Street players would pursue the funding with the displayed aggressiveness.
He further indicated that military finances were used to support the schools, albeit on paper, in order to ensure that at most 90% of their earnings streamed from federal programs, a requirement. The requirement precludes counting of the benefits of the military on the limit of 90%. Within the report, the most of the recruits were shown as being veterans from the Iraqi as well as Afghanistan war fronts, and were largely targeted by the colleges (Eaton, paras. 3-4).
Collin Eaton indicates that alludes that there are many voices which are concerned, and not appeased, by the recruitment efforts of the colleges aimed at the veterans, as they feel as if they are under siege, from the aggressive and frequently misleading campaigns by the colleges.
