Transfeminism is a movement that advocates for transgender women's rights, particularly the right to assume a gender identity that opposes the one assigned at birth. For instance, trans-women: - female assigned male at birth can have the freedom to identify as females as their preferred gender. Transfeminism also supports trans rights in other fields, such as cissexism and transphobia. Cissexism is discrimination against transgender people. It is a form of sexism that construe gender identities of transgender individuals as less legitimate than those of binary gender (Hibbs 235).
Transphobia, on the other hand, is the fear, disbelief, hatred, or mistrust of transgender people. It can create elusive and overt forms of discrimination. For instance, transgender individuals or people thought to be transgender may be denied employment opportunities, healthcare services, housing, and other services. Both cissexism and transphobia are linked to the policing of the sex binary and gender binary in the sense that they hold a similar belief. That is, the belief that biological sex and gender fall into only two categories in a fixed and binary system: male and female (Hibbs 235). Based on this policy, cissexism and transphobia acknowledge individuals who identify with their birth sex and gender as normal and healthy. However, those who identify with their opposite birth sex and gender are deemed deviant and sick.
