The center of the analysis is Jane, a student who seeks to fit into a specific group setting, specifically a girl-centric situation. Jane attempts to guarantee that the other girls in the group accept her and treat her as one of them. The scenario will study Jane's behaviour in three distinct categories in which she portrays diverse behaviours and characters to demonstrate her deserving and sense of belonging. The emphasis will be on the gender and class label.
Observation 1-
Jane Doe has an urgent need to belong to a specific group. She approaches Amanda, the leader of the girl clique, in an effort to befriend her. iPhone ownership is a distinguishing attribute of the girl group. Jane, on the other hand, regrettably owns a Samsung phone. As a gesture of good faith, Amanda invites Jane to the region where the cliques congregate, where Jane introduces herself to her peers. Despite the warm response from the other girls, Jane exhibits signs of unease and discomfort, particularly when others use their iPhones to take pics. The following day, Jane arrives at school with an iPhone that she purchased the day before. During the girl's night out, Amanda congratulates Jane on purchasing a new phone, and Jane responds with a confident smile.
Analysis 1
A deeper analysis of observation emphasizes the labeling of gender and class. From the scenario, Jane seeks justification and belonging, whereby she feels joining Amanda's group will lift her class status and bring gender clarity. Her actions align with Strauss's (1982) notion of discovering and claiming self-worth. According to Jane, to feel worthy of the group, she must acquire an iPhone based on the ideology to fit in and discover her sense of class. She views the phone acquisition as a must-do, translating to a claim of worthiness. In addition, the observation directly coincides with Ong's concept of the realm of gender, whereby Jane feels the need to acquire the iPhone based on how the other group members will view her. She feels a sense of class and belonging by associating with a clique of the same gender.
