White Privilege
Male dominance and hierarchical structure in our societies depict the aspect of racism. Racism is discrimination based on racial lines which McIntosh calls, “something that puts others at a disadvantage.” McIntosh talks about racism using the white privilege concept. According to him, white privilege is an invisible package of special provision or unearned assets. The race is the skin color which gives one a privilege over another’s skin color. For example, whites are advantageous in many aspects of life compared to the blacks. In most instances, much of the oppressiveness by the whites over other racial groups occurs unconsciously. Having a ‘white’ skin in America open doors for the whites unlike other races (McIntosh). Segregation of schools has been a heated debate in America due to whites demanding white only schools and black schools for black students.
