The Help
Mississippi represents the corner of slavery in America. African Americans in the south would be exposed to the highest level of discrimination. Even after the northern part of the country had abolished discrimination by color, the south was still stuck to its ways. Society and class form the basis of the movie. This is a movie that brings out the politics that were common at the time but more importantly the struggles of the African Americans. They were living in a society that considered them unworthy of a place at the table with the rest of the whites. There is even a proposal by Hilly the main representative to have the African Americans use a toilet and bathroom that would be build outside the house. This goes to show that the African Americans were not considered equals. However The Help is a not just a story about the triumph of African- American women in a society that is full of prejudice, hate, discrimination, violence and even death; but a story about woman’s liberation in general. “The Help” uses lot of pathos in order to make the generally people through the stories then bring the audiences variety emotion like frustrating, angry...etc. At same time, the movie use ethos to express during the Civil Rights Movement in 1963 Jackson, Mississippi between white and black people.
Racial profiling is a key theme in the film. The producer is keen to bring out the themes of society and class by amplifying the elements of race in the society. There is a reflection of the challenges that were faced by the African Americans in the 60s as the civil rights movements were brewing. For the African American women in the film, even getting employed is a challenge as the opportunities are controlled by the whites.
