This paper reviews Glasgow, Shulman and Covarrubias’s “The Ordinary Conception of Race in the United States and Its Relation to Racial Attitudes: A New Approach.” In the study, the authors depict that race is a biological representation, ancestry and socially based concept that defines the ordinary racial thinking. The study used 449 USA adult participants in an internet survey to determine the relationship between racial attitudes and the conception of race. The participants comprised of different racial groupings with 70% being women and 30% men aged between 18 to 82 years (Glasgow, Shulman and Covarrubias 2009).
According to the authors, there is one-drop rule to ordinary adult-race thinking which is essentialist. Through a wide range of literature and a survey, the study represents race as a conception of either natural or social concept or both (p.18).
