Racism in the United States
Racism refers to the discrimination of a person because of their skin color or ethnic background. This vise leads to discriminatory treatment of people in workplaces, travel, hotels, and even government offices. In the US, racism has existed since the colonial era. When the Europeans took over America, they discriminated against the blacks and Indians. This essay analyzes factors that have promoted racism and the effects of racism in the United States. I will show how racism has evolved in the country and how the vise has affected the country’s economy.
Factors That Promote Racism
Several factors promote racism in the US. The categorization of people is one of them. Naturally, people are more attracted to people; they share the same characteristics. For example, whites love to associate mostly with whites. The coronavirus pandemic onset led to more than half of African Americans lost their jobs (Solly). The same is right with the black race. The United States has a culture where people are categories in line with their ethnic origins (Zimring, 6). This culture led to African-Americans having their places of leisure like clubs separate from the whites. Although not all Africans are secluded from such areas, most of them are. This makes the black race feel oppressed.
Stereotyping is a significant factor that contributes to racism in the US. The black race is often portrayed as criminals and out of place. This factor has led to several instances of open discrimination against the black race by the security authorities in the US. For example, Minneapolis police officers killed George Floyd in broad daylight despite not resisting arrest or even endangering the Americans' lives. This is an instance of open racism.
The history of America contributes to a more extensive percentage of racism in the US. The white often mistreated blacks by using them as slaves. The blacks were even sold to other farms to work for the whites. The whites grew up knowing that the black race is inferiors; hence, it contributes to the rampant racism cases (Feder). Around 12.5 million people were kidnapped from Africa and sent to the Americas through the transatlantic slave trade between 1525 and 1866 (Solly). The historical effects of this kidnapping are still fresh in the land as the blacks are still discriminated against and mistreated.
