Stereotype or Not?
There are some diseases that are prone to one culture or race, so do we make stereotypes on that? I have taught many people about their diet with diabetes. In the area where I live, there is a high Hispanic population. I found that many Hispanics have diabetes and they are not compliant with the diet-mainly because of lack of knowledge/education. I have found that many people do not realize that starches break down to sugar. This is a problem in the hispanic community because they eat flour tortillas with almost every meal in my area. Would this be a stereotype? I don't think so but would like all of your thoughts?

A stereotype refers to the assumption that people in a group or race share the same characteristics. The ideas originate from certain groups’ observations and experiences and extend to the entire race, gender, or culture. In the given scenario, the author samples a few of their neighbors and realizes that most Hispanics are diabetic and do not understand how starch is broken down into simple sugars; glucose, maltose, and sucrose. The author then concludes that all Hispanics lack the necessary knowledge on the digestion of starch and are therefore predisposed to diabetes (Goel, 2018). I think the scenario is not stereotypic. Instead, the scenario depicts the generalization of the Hispanic community.
