An Ancient Greek: A Man for all Seasons - Positive and Natural Law

Film Title, A Man for all Season". Natural law has been the foundation of much of the concept of law and justice in the west since the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, how does the film, A Man for all Seasons, relate to Natural and Positive Law?

SINCE the time of the ancient Greeks there has existed the concept of Natural Law. The ancient greeks under the influence of the materialism of democritus, who develop the idea that all of the physical is comprised of atoms, felt that since the universe was composed of the same material (they felt that even the gods were material) then there must be an underlying law of the universe. They came to this conclusion by their study of the cosmos. They quickly realized that the cosmos followed set, unchanging laws. By the study of both lunar and planetary movements they discovered that the cosmos moves according to law. In their estimation, if the planets, the cosmos, as well as humans are made of the atomic material, then we also must be guided by Natural Law. They posited that if, as an example, the moon were to not follow its law of movements, then the result would be chaos. Hence, men, in their respective societies, were to also not follow Natural Law, the result would be the same, chaos..
Soon the issue became, what constitute Natural Law? Eventually, it was felt that there were two concepts of law; Natural and Positive. Positive are those laws that are made by man. Positive law can be changeable, just or unjust, and are tied to specific societies and time and place. An example of positive law would be slavery; down to history slavery has been accepted by positive law as legal. Yet can it not also be construed by unjust? if so, then slavery is in contradiction to very concepts of Natural Law. Natural Law is very different, it is not changeable, it is always the same; it is not tied to culture of society, it is universal, it is not tied to class, it applies equally to every one. It is always just. Hence, any law that is unjust, must by implication, be contrary to natural law. Later, by John Locke, the foundations of Natural Law predicted upon three propositions, that every individual has the natural right of life, liberty, and property (by property he meant the right to participate in the political process).
In the film "Man for all seasons" which is ostensibly about the life of Sir Thomas More, the real underlying issue is that of law, which permeates the whole film.
